I slid it in my back pockect before anyone else could see it. I took the mail in and sat it in the mail slot before going to my room to open the letter.

I tried to think of anyone I might have known in California, but no one came to mind. After pondering it for a few more minutes, I opened the envelope and pulled out a scroll-type piece of paper. I unfolded it and it read:

"Its been a long time since I've seen you Cindy. I remember when you were born. I hope all is well over there. I know for a fact I will never see you because right now I'm in jail...for life. I'm on death row but just know I lived to protect you. I know you're probably all grown up now and I wish I could turn back the hands of time just so I can see you again, but I know I can't. This may be my last letter before I get my final words. Just know that I love you and no matter how hard things may get, know that you are stronger than you know."

I read the letter a few more times, silently hoping it would say more. The letter was from my dad, whom I hadn't seen since I was four. I felt a few tears fall from my eyes just as Zonnique came into my room. "Ugh, girl, what are you crying for?" she asked. "Nothing," I wiped my face. "What do you want?" She ignored me. "Is that a letter in your hands?" "Yeah. It's mine." "Nobody writes you." She reached for the letter but I held it out of her reach. "Let me see it." "No, it's mine."

"I'm going to tell." "For what it's not yours?" "Let me see it." "No." I said stretching my arm high." "Mom." She said turning around and that's when I hid the letter really quick behind my bed.

My stepmother came into my room about a minute later. "Where's this letter, Cindy?" "I don't have a letter." "Don't make me have to look for it." "Look all you want. You won't find anything."

While she looked around my room for the letter I was wondering how she knew. Zonnique never told her what it was, I became suspicious of that.

Maybe she'd been expecting it? I didn't know, nor did I care. I was just ready for her to leave.

As soon as they left the room I got the letter and slid it in my safe place. I had a box full of important things under the floor board beneath my bed.

I went downstairs to get something to eat then went back to my room.

I grabbed the letter and looked up the address. I know my dad said this may be his final words but maybe I can make it to California in time. Who am I kidding? I would never get to California and I didn't want to spend my savings just to find out he's gone.

After thinking about it for a few more minutes, I let the thought go. Well, I tried to. I wished he would've said more, then I got angry. When he left, he never said where he was going, then he never came back. On top of that, he left me with Cruella Deville and the left-behind dalmations.

My life was living hell but I had plans to change that. I really needed some kind of hero, an savior, a knight in shinning armor but that only happens in fairy tales.

***** "Cindy, get up. You have to clean up before you go to school," my stepmother stated, barging into my room. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. It had to be, like, three a.m.

I looked at the clock and it was three a.m. I already knew the drill. I got up and got myself ready for school and then put my apron on. I went to the kitchen and made breakfast for everyone. My stepmother wouldn't let me eat the cooked breakfast that I cooked so when she wasn't looking I usually put my food in a plastic bag in my bookbag. As soon as I finished cooking I left the house and walked three blocks to the bus stop.

When I got there, my friend Tracey was there. Tracey was this gay dude who was obsessed with skinny jeans and wierd-looking stuffed animals. I couldn't help but love him. "Cindyyyyyy..." he called, popping his lips and clapping in excitement. "I have somethng to tell you, diva." I laughed. "What's up, Trace?"

"Girl this lil honey at the mall was looking me over. And I think he wants me." "How'd you figure that?" "Girl he was smiling and winking at me. Showing me all those pearly whites." "What did you do?" "Girl I was giving him face, hair flips, and my best model strut." "So did you say something?" "Girl no you know I'm not ready for no committed relationship." Tracey said patting his head like he had weave.

"So why are you even going through the motions?" "Girl, he was checking for me, not the other way around." "Can you stop saying girl before every sentence?" "I'm sorry, girl." I shook my head and smiled as the bus stopped in front of us. We sat in our usual seats, which were near the back of the bus.

We talked and I laughed at Tracey the whole bus ride. Being with him just made my life so much easier sometimes. "Tracey I got a letter from my dad." "Your dad? Really? What did it say?" "Well he just wanted to see if I was good but he said this was his last letter." "Why?" "He is on death row." "Aww I'm sorry." "Its okay, I never knew him. I really want to go see him before its all over but I have a feeling that it will be too late when I get there."

"Where is he?" "California." "I can get you a plane ticket for six dollars." I looked at him like he was crazy. I did not want to get involved in anything illegal.
